New derogation from the HGV driving ban in Italy
On 9th October, the national highway police in Italy issued an explanation concerning the possibility of empty runs by HGVs even on days when driving bans are in effect, under certain conditions.
This derogation applies to driving bans for HGVs over 7.5 t, which have already obtained a derogation from the prefecture by virtue of Article 9 of regulation 525 issued on 4 December 2018. According to the explanation, the derogation also applies when the vehicle is running empty to the place of loading. The derogation applies from the starting point of the journey via the place of loading to the point of destination. However, each empty run has to be indicated in the application for a derogation “to enable the prefecture to evaluate the distance and the route for which the derogation is requested on the day when a driving ban is in effect”.
