Major changes on the E4 in Sweden. Overtaking ban during the holidays
Sweden is introducing a temporary overtaking ban on the E4 section between Gävle and Tönnebro during the Easter traffic peak. The restriction aims to improve traffic flow and safety, but for the transport industry it means possible longer travel times, greater unpredictability of deliveries, and the need to adjust route planning along the country’s key north–south corridor.
The Swedish Transport Administration (Trafikverket) has decided to introduce the overtaking ban on this motorway section. It is one of the most heavily used parts of the road network, especially during holiday periods. The measure is intended to improve traffic flow, enhance safety, and reduce the risk of accidents during high traffic volumes. According to Trafikverket, the solution is already delivering measurable results – drivers are complying with the restrictions and traffic is more stable.
The overtaking ban will apply on four key holiday traffic dates:
❌Northbound:
◾ April 1 (Wednesday) – 13:00–22:00
◾ April 2 (Maundy Thursday) – 13:00–22:00
❌Southbound:
◾ April 5 (Easter Sunday) – 13:00–22:00
◾ April 6 (Easter Monday) – 13:00–22:00
This is not the only measure taken by Swedish authorities. Due to heavy traffic:
– speed limits have been reduced on the E4 near Jönköping,
– road services remain on heightened alert,
– additional temporary restrictions may be introduced.
For transport operators, this means increased unpredictability of travel times, especially on the north–south axis of Sweden. Authorities urge drivers to prepare properly for holiday travel. Key recommendations include:
• planning routes with peak hours in mind,
• keeping safe distances,
• adjusting speed to road conditions,
• preparing vehicles for changing weather conditions (snow, rain, slippery roads).
