Italy: A14 closed after landslide. Truck detours via A1
The closure of sections of the A14 motorway between Poggio Imperiale and Termoli following a landslide near Petacciato has cut off a key transport corridor along the Adriatic coast. With SS16 impassable and rail traffic suspended, transport is being diverted via the A1, increasing transit times and putting additional pressure on alternative routes.
In the Petacciato area (Molise), a large landslide has reactivated, paralysing one of Italy’s main transport corridors. Sections of the A14 Bologna–Taranto motorway have been closed in both directions, while the local alternative, the SS16 Adriatica road, remains impassable. Traffic has been redirected to long detours, and disruptions may last for weeks.
Closures apply:
– between Poggio Imperiale and Vasto Sud towards Bologna,
– between Vasto Sud and Termoli towards Bari.
The reason is the activation of a monitoring system on the landslide front and urgent technical inspections of the infrastructure.
For heavy transport, this means a complete bypass of the Adriatic section. The designated detour is:
Vasto Sud → SS650 Trignina → Isernia → SS85 → Venafro → Caianello → A1 (Milan–Naples) → A30 → A16 → Bari.
Northbound traffic follows the same route in reverse.
For long-haul transport, a full shift to the A1–A30–A16 corridor is recommended, bypassing the Adriatic coast entirely.
Disruptions are not limited to road transport. Rail traffic has been suspended on the Vasto San Salvo – Termoli section, including freight services on the north–south axis (Bari – Pescara – Bologna – Milan). Trains are being rerouted via Foggia – Caserta – Rome, extending transit times and further reducing corridor capacity.
In practice, this results in a cumulative impact: A14 closed, SS16 impassable, and rail capacity limited. The effect is increasing pressure on alternative routes and a growing risk of delivery delays to southern Italy.
The Italian Civil Protection warns that clearing the landslide may take weeks or even months. The situation remains dynamic and requires ongoing monitoring.
