Netherlands: Weekend closures of A16 and A13 ahead of the opening of the new motorway

After six years of intensive infrastructure works, drivers in the Rotterdam region will finally see the opening of the new A16 motorway together with the Rottemeren tunnel. The route will be put into operation in stages in October 2025, with the key element of the project being its integration with the existing A13 and A16 motorways.

After six years of construction, the new A16 Rotterdam motorway with the Rottemeren tunnel will be opened in stages in October 2025.
➡️ The southbound direction (Dordrecht/Breda) will open on Monday, October 6 at 05:00.
➡️ The northbound direction (Delft/The Hague) will open on Monday, October 27 at 05:00.

To connect the new motorway with the existing A13 and A16 routes, two major weekend closures are planned:

⏺️ From Friday, October 3 at 22:00 until Monday, October 6 at 05:00:
▪️ A13 motorway closed between Delft-Zuid (TU Delft) and the Kleinpolderplein interchange, including the Ruyven service area.
▪️ N209 road closed between Vliegveldweg and N472 (Bergschenhoek).

⏺️ From Friday, October 24 at 22:00 until Monday, October 27 at 05:00:
▪️ The main carriageway of A16 and the parallel carriageway closed to through traffic between the Ridderkerk and Terbregseplein interchanges, including ramps 24, 25 and 26.
▪️ A13 motorway closed between the Kleinpolderplein interchange and Delft-Zuid (TU Delft), including the Vrijenban service area.
▪️ N209 road closed between N472 (Bergschenhoek) and Vliegveldweg.

Rijkswaterstaat advises drivers to plan their journeys in advance and use alternative routes during the weekend closures. These closures are essential for connecting the new A16 with the existing motorway network, ensuring smooth traffic flow once the entire section is opened.
