From 8 September: Changes in traffic management on Slovenia’s H4. Trucks restricted to one lane

On Slovenia’s expressway H4 in the Vipava area, a new traffic management scheme will be introduced starting 8 September 2025. The decision was taken following a meeting at the motorway maintenance base in Vipava, attended by DARS CEO mag. Andrej Ribič, representatives of the Ministry of Infrastructure, the Police, emergency services, the fire brigade, local municipalities, and hauliers’ associations.

Key arrangements
✅ Trucks and buses over 3.5 tonnes heading towards Italy will be directed to the H4, where they will be allowed to use only one traffic lane. The second lane will be reserved exclusively for emergency services.

✅ Freight traffic heading towards Slovenia will be redirected on the Italian side to the Fernetiči border crossing. In addition, at the Šempeter pri Gorici junction, the Police will turn back transit trucks attempting to reach the Vrtojba crossing and the H4.

✅ Passenger cars in both directions will be diverted to the parallel national road.

According to DARS, the change in traffic organization was necessary because Italian border authorities in Fernetiči are carrying out increased checks, while the number of entry lanes there is limited. To prevent congestion and improve traffic flow, new rules had to be introduced.

I am pleased that we managed to reach a joint agreement that will ensure greater safety and smoother traffic flow on this important section. I am convinced that the measures adopted will contribute to better management of the situation and make life easier for both drivers and residents of the border areas emphasized DARS CEO mag. Andrej Ribič.
