EC urges Tirol to reduce HGV traffic restrictions
In 2018 there are 25 days with restricted HGV traffic on the Inntal motorway across the German-Austrian border near Kufstein-Nord.
To reduce traffic intensity on busy international routes, a maximum of 250-300 lorries will be allowed to cross the border per hour on designated days. The measure has already caused huge traffic jams stretching over several dozens of kilometers on the German side of the border.
The UE Commissioner for Transport, Violeta Bulc, has called on the government of Tirol to reduce the number of days with traffic restrictions, arguing that the current schedule for 2018 with 25 dates over the period between March and November is a violation of the principle of the free movement of goods in Europe, goes beyond what is necessary to ensure the security of supplies in Tirol and causes traffic jams in Bavaria, which are an additional strain on the local environment and disrupt traffic on the German side of the border.
