Austria: new toll charges for HGVs
Starting from January 1, 2020, toll charges for trucks buses and heavy motorhomes will increase as a result of a 2.1 percent inflation-related adjustment of the mileage-based charge. The change, which applies to all motor vehicles over 3.5 tonnes is based on the harmonized consumer price index for 2018.
EURO 6 vehicles will continue to benefit from discounts amounting to around EUR 20 million. Toll charges for zero-emission electric or hydrogen vehicles will be significantly reduced. The toll charge system will continue to favor the most environmentally friendly vehicles.
According to the announcement of the Austrian motorway operator Asfinag, from 2020, the external costs of air pollution for EURO VI vehicles will be charged in full. The entire toll charge consists of the following components: the mileage-based toll, depending on the vehicle category (based on the number of axles), external costs related to air pollution (depending on the number of axles and EURO emission class) and noise pollution (depending on the number of axles and time of day).
Revenues from toll charges will continue to be used to support the operation, construction, maintenance and safety of traffic on Austrian motorways and expressways.
